CHILDCARE CRISIS IN BANFF
Whatās happening? Childcare challenges are hitting families hard in Banff, prompting some to contemplate relocating.
The Struggle: With many parents gearing up to return to work after maternity leave, securing reliable childcare is becoming increasingly stressful. The lack of nearby family support only pressures those living in the area.
High Demand: The Day Care Society of Banff manages two childcare centers, both facing long waitlists. Many parents are left anxious about finding a spot for their little ones.
Community Survey: The Town of Banff is actively seeking feedback from parents through a survey open until October 17. This initiative aims to better understand childcare needs and brainstorm potential solutions.
Declining Family Numbers: Recent assessments indicate a drop in families in Banff, with a noticeable decrease in two-parent households. This trend highlights the urgency of addressing issues related to childcare and housing.
Long Commutes: Some families are even considering daycare options in Canmore, which would significantly extend their daily commuteāa frustrating reality for many.

šØCanmore resident Faith Villanis had an unforgettable encounter on October 7 while watching the northern lights. As she admired the aurora, a black bear approached and sniffed her from inches away! Though startled, the bear was merely curious. Faith now sees it as a true Canadian moment and feels lucky to have experienced it.
šThe northern lights returned to Banff and Canmore last night after a recent solar eruption. In case you didnāt know, Banff Sunshine Village offers a live stream of the aurora. So, if you missed it last night, you can replay the livestream!
CANMOREāS NEW WILDLIFE FENCE
Whatās Happening: A wildlife fence aimed at reducing collisions along the Trans-Canada Highway is making strides forward.
Local bylaw amendments: Council approved a land use bylaw amendment, allowing fence construction and maintenance without a permit. A public hearing is set for November 5, with provincial updates on the project at Canmore's October 15 committee meeting.
Collision Stats: In 2023, 34 wildlife-vehicle collisions were reported along the highway, involving various animals like elk, deer, and even black bears.
Construction Plans: The fence will stretch from the Bow River bridge to Banff National Parkās east gate, with plans to begin construction in 2025. Itās projected to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions by up to 80%.
Financial Support: The provincial government has allocated $15 million to address wildlife-vehicle collisions.

WHAT'S THE CANMORE REAL ESTATE MARKET LIKE THESE DAYS?
By Cory Hand
As a Canmore real estate professional, I can tell you that market conditions here are dynamic, with demand for properties remaining strong, especially for vacation homes and investment properties.
The townās proximity to Banff National Park and its outdoor lifestyle appeal continue to attract buyers, both locally and internationally. Prices have been steadily rising due to limited land supply and high buyer interest, particularly in luxury homes and condos. Inventory tends to be lower, which can create a competitive environment for buyers.
However, opportunities still exist, particularly in pre-construction projects or slightly older properties that may offer more value. It's a balanced market, but leaning towards favoring sellers at the moment, especially in high-demand areas near trails and downtown.
