BISON HUNT IN BANFF

What’s happening? Next month, a bison hunt led by Indigenous hunters will occur in Banff National Park for the first time in 139 years.

Cultural Revival: The Indigenous Advisory Circle requested the hunt and said it’s about reconnecting with traditions and strengthening ties to the land.

Learning Opportunity: This pilot year is not just about the hunt; it’s a chance for both Parks Canada and Indigenous Nations to learn from one another and shape future management practices together.

The Hunt Is Not Without Opposition: James Bartlett, Lawyer and Naturalist, said Parks Canada facilitated a hunt in Jasper National Park in 2023, and now a hunt in Banff National Park in 2024. “The trend is disconcerting and makes one question the sanctity of our national parks. Are they protected wildlife sanctuaries? Or are they not? As far as I know, there is no legal basis whereby any citizen of Canada can bring a firearm into a National Park and kill an animal,” says Bartlett.

Staying Informed: Parks Canada will keep everyone updated on the hunt, acknowledging that Canadians care deeply about the bison population in the park.

BOW VALLEY INSIDERS ARE THE REAL MVPs!

Remember Oakley from last Monday's newsletter?

Quick recap: He runs Bow Valley’s local concrete repair and restoration company - Pine Peak Paving.

After that lil' ad in last week's newsletter, he booked two full weeks of business in just 48 hours.

Bow Valley Insiders, you’re amazing! Thank you for rallying behind our local businesses!

While this is a friendly neighborhood update… it’s also a not-so-sneaky extra plug for Oakley again (we couldn't resist, hehe 😉).

So, why care about concrete stuff?

Because with just weeks left until winter hits, now’s the time to protect your driveways, patios, and walkways.

Whether you've got cracks that need fixing before the freeze-thaw cycle makes them worse, or you're crack-free and want to stay that way, sealing now means saving big later.

Get a free quote here, and feel damn good knowing your concrete’s ready to take on the Bow Valley winter!

WILD WINDSTORM

Tree Trouble: Eight firefighters and two RCMP officers rushed to Mount Norquay Road after a tree fell, hitting a car waiting for a train. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the vehicle didn’t come out unscathed.

Multiple Incidents: The windstorm didn’t just stop there. A tree also toppled onto Mountain Avenue, blocking the multi-use trail, and another fell at a private home in Harvie Heights, crushing a truck.

Power Outages: With winds reaching up to 100 km/h, several trees crashed into power lines, causing outages across northern Banff. Areas affected included the train and bus stations, IGA, and several neighborhoods.

Quick Response: The Town of Banff praised the swift action of their crews, who cleared downed trees and ensured safety.
